The course of doctoral studies

  • Academic year starts for doctoral studies on October 1 and ends on September 30. The winter semester concludes together with other degrees of study (see the timetable).
  • Study timetable for doctoral students is published in advance. Doctoral students in the full-time form of study are informed on their involvement in teaching at lower levels of study in advance by the relevant head of the department.
  • Doctoral students study according to their ISP. Fulfilment of the plan is annually checked at the end of September (Article 19 of the Study and Examination Regulations, SER). In the case a student does not meet the ISP or the SERhe or she is not enrolled in the next year (expelled) or enrolled conditionally (Article 20 of the SER).
  • Within the 2nd to 4th semester, the student ordinarily prepares a proposition (“theses”) of the dissertation and submits it to the department for discussion.
  • Upon taking all the ISP-registered exams and meeting other study obligations listed in the ISP or resulting from the Dean’s decrees (notably the publishing activities), the student may register for the final state exam (Article 21 of the SER).
  • Upon passing the final state exam, the student usually leaves abroad for a foreign study stay, agreed with his or her supervisor (alternatively, he or she gets involved in an international project during the studies).
  • For the entire period of study, the doctoral student prepares his or her presentations at appropriate conferences and drafts professional papers for the publication in quality journals.
