Presentation at a Conference: From preparation to realisation

The seminar is aimed at doctoral students who wish to acquire the basic knowledge and skills required to successfully present their research work at scientific conferences.

The main aim of the workshop is to equip doctoral students with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to successfully present their research at academic conferences. Participants will gain an insight into the structure and dynamics of academic conferences, learn about different types of presentations and how best to participate. The workshop will enable students to improve their public speaking and presentation skills, learn how to use visual aids effectively and structure presentations so that key messages and research findings are clearly communicated.

  • Basics of professional and academic conferences: Format and structure
  • Choosing a conference, applying and submitting an abstract
  • Different types of presentations at conferences
  • Preparing the presentation: from choosing the content to designing the slides
  • Exercises to prepare for the presentation: public speaking and presentation techniques
  • Delivering the presentation: dealing with anxiety, communicating with participants, dealing with feedback
  • Participation in the conference, activities during and after the conference

About Prof. Dr. Janez Stare:

Dr Janez Stare is a full professor of public sector organisation at the Faculty of Public Administration at the University of Ljubljana. He received his doctorate with a thesis on the relationship between personal leadership potential and leadership success in state administrative bodies. He has deepened his professional and academic knowledge at the University of Speyer, the University of Liverpool and Glasgow Caledonian University, among others. He teaches subjects in the areas of leadership, human resource management, organisational communication and administrative operations at all three levels of study: Undergraduate, Masters and PhD. He has led or participated in numerous national and international research projects. At the Faculty of Public Administration of the University of Ljubljana, he is the head of the joint doctoral programme “Governance and economics in the public sector”, which the faculty runs in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Business and bussines of the University of Rijeka, Croatia. Since 2021, he is also Head of the Department of Organisation and Informatics. He has held several leadership and management positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Administration at the University of Ljubljana from 2013–2021. He was a member and chairman of the Council of Officials of the Republic of Slovenia, an independent body responsible for setting standards for professional competence, selection criteria and methods for verifying qualifications for the selection of top civil servants in the Slovenian state administration.
