Prof. Robert S. Kaplan – doctor honoris causa

Na návrh vědecké rady Fakulty financí a účetnictví ze dne 13. listopadu 2019 rozhodla dne 26. listopadu 2019 vědecká rada Vysoké školy ekonomické v Praze o udělení titulu Doctor oeconomiae honoris causa prof. Robertu S. Kaplanovi, emeritnímu profesoru Harvard Business School.

Profesor Robert S. Kaplan je přední světový odborník v oblasti strategického řízení, řízení rizik a manažerského účetnictví . Po celém světě jej proslavila zejména metoda Balanced Scorecard, kterou vyvinul spolu s Davidem P. Nortonem a kterou poprvé publikovali v roce 1992 v Harvard Business Review a dále metoda alokace nepřímých nákladů (TDABC Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing), kterou vytvořil spolu s Stevenem R. Andersonem (publikováno v roce 2003 rovněž v HBR). Jeho knihy byly přeloženy v mnoha vydáních do více než 24 jazyků (včetně češtiny), jeho články vyšly v řadě prestižních světových odborných časopisů a jsou široce citovány. Kromě akademických ocenění se práce prof. Kaplana vyznačuje tím, jak široce byly jeho metody strategického řízení implementovány ve firmách po celém světě (včetně ČR), a to v nejrůznějších odvětvích, čehož důkazem jsou získaná podnikatelská ocenění.

Původně plánovaný termín slavnostního ceremoniálu předání čestného doktorátu VŠE v Praze rektorkou VŠE prof. Ing. Hanou Machkovou, CSc. byl zrušen z důvodu omezení v důsledku nouzového stavu v souvislosti s pandemií koronaviru. Slavnostní ceremoniál předání čestného doktorátu proběhl ve čtvrtek 23. září 2021 od 16:00 hodin ve Vencovského aule VŠE v Praze (nám. W. Churchilla 4, Praha 3 – Žižkov) za přítomnosti rektorky a dalších akademických funkcionářů VŠE v Praze, rektorů ostatních vysokých škol, velvyslanců zahraničních ambasád, významní hostů z organizací a institucí, studentů, absolventů i široké odborné veřejnosti:

Čestný doktorát uděluje VŠE zvláště významným představitelům české a světové vědy a praxe, zejména pak ekonomické. Udělení čestného titulu profesorovi Robertu S. Kaplanovi zapadá do profilu VŠE v Praze jako špičkového vědecko-pedagogického univerzitního pracoviště, které rozvíjí vědecko-výzkumnou činnost a její nejnovější poznatky zahrnuje do výuky ve spolupráci s praxí. Celoživotní činnost prof. Kaplana je nejlepším příkladem propojení akademického výzkumu a praxe v oblasti strategického řízení a manažerského účetnictví a je inspirací jak pro akademickou obec Vysoké školy ekonomické v Praze tak i podnikatelské prostředí v ČR. 

 On the proposal of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Finance and Accounting from 13 November 2019, the Scientific Council of the Prague University of Economics and Business decided on 26 November 2019 to award the title of Doctor oeconomiae honoris causa to Prof. Robert S. Kaplan, Professor of Harvard Business School.

Professor Robert S. Kaplan is a world-leading expert in strategic management, risk management, and management accounting. He is known worldwide for the Balanced Scorecard method developed with David P. Norton and first published in 1992 in the Harvard Business Review. Furthermore, the TDABC (Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing) method was developed with Steven R. Anderson (also published in 2003 in HBR). His books have been translated into more than 24 languages (including the Czech language), his articles have appeared in many prestigious international journals and are widely cited. In addition to academic awards, Prof. Kaplan’s work is distinguished by how widely his strategic management methods have been implemented in companies worldwide (including the Czech Republic), in a wide variety of industries, as evidenced by the business awards he has received.

The honorary doctorate ceremony awarded by the Rector of the Prague University of Economics and Business, Prof. Hana Machková, took place on Thursday, 23 September 2021 at 16:00, in the Vencovský Auditorium of the Prague University of Economics and Business (W. Churchill Square 4, Prague 3 – Žižkov). All academic representatives of the VŠE in Prague, including Rector and rectors of other Czech universities, foreign ambassadors, distinguished guests from organizations and institutions, students, alumni, and the general public, were present at the ceremony:

The Honorary Doctorate is awarded by the Prague University of Economics and Business to distinguished Czech and world science and practice representatives, especially in economics. The awarding of the honorary degree to Professor Robert S. Kaplan suits the profile of the VŠE in Prague as a leading university, which develops scientific and research activities and incorporates its latest findings into teaching in cooperation with practice. Furthermore, Prof. Kaplan’s lifelong work is the best example of the connection between academic research and strategic management and management accounting practice. It is an inspiration for the academic community of the Prague University of Economics and Business and the business environment in the Czech Republic.
Robert S. Kaplan se narodil 2. května 1940 v New Yorku, USA . Bakalářský titul získal v oboru elektrotechniky na Massachusetts Institute of Technology, kde následně získal magisterský titul rovněž v elektrotechnice. Na doktorské studium přešel na Cornell University, kde získal doktorát z operačního výzkumu. Po ukončení studia zahájil prof. Kaplan svou akademickou kariéru v roce 1968 na Tepper School of Business na Carnegie-Mellon University, kde v letech 1977 až 1983 působil jako děkan. V roce 1984 přešel prof. Kaplan na Harvard Business School, kde byl jmenován profesorem v oboru rozvoje metod vedení společností (Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development). V roce 2006 byl jmenován do Účetní síně slávy. Ve stejném roce také obdržel Cenu za celoživotní přínos od sekce manažerského účetnictví Americké účetní asociace (AAA). Od 90. let mu byly uděleny čestné doktoráty na Univerzitě ve Stuttgartu v roce 1994, na Univerzitě v Lodži v roce 2006 a na University of Waterloo v roce 2008.

  • Balanced Scorecard vytvořili Robert S. Kaplan a David P. Norton jako metodu, jak vyváženě propojit existující aktivity společností s jejich dlouhodobými cíli. Kaplan a Norton představili metodu Balanced Scorecard poprvé ve svém článku v Harvard Business Review z roku 1992. Balanced Scorecard zvyšuje výkonost společností, a proto byla tato metoda implementována nejrůznějšími společnostmi ze všech průmyslových odvětví a koutů světa, o čemž svědčí skutečnost, že od roku 2000 skupina Palladium International každoročně oceňuje nejlepší projekty v oblasti strategického řízení zařazením do Síně slávy Balanced Scorecard.
  • Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) Prof. Kaplan a Steven R. Anderson jsou spoluautory metody alokace nepřímých nákladů (TDABC – Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing), která umožňuje porozumění a parametrické modelování nákladů tak, aby pomohla společnostem se dostat jednodušeji  a s vyšší jistotou k zisku. V poslední době je metoda  používána ve zdravotnictví, kde umožňuje měřit náklady na poskytování zdravotních služeb v celém spektru zdravotní péče.

Prof. Kaplan je autorem nebo spoluautorem 14 knih a více než 175 článků (z toho 26 v Harvard Business Review), které jsou všechny vysoce citovány. Do konce září 2019 bylo do databáze Core Collection Web of Science (základní vyhledávání) zařazeno celkem 100 publikací s více než 10 000 citacemi a s H indexem 34. Databáze Scopus obsahuje 90 publikací s celkem přes 12 000 citací  a index H prof. Kaplana je podle této databáze také 34. Důkazem celosvětové reputace prof. Kaplana je také celkový počet citací registrovaných v databázi Google Scholar. Publikace a jejich překlady do jiných jazyků mají více než 170 000 citací, z toho téměř 59 000 od roku 2014 (posledních pět let, bez další úpravy vykazovaných údajů).

Kniha „The Execution Premium: Linking Strategy to Operations for Competitive Advantage, Alignment, Strategy Maps“ byla společností Amazon vybrána jako jedna z deseti nejlepších knih pro praxi za rok 2004, „The Strategy-Focused Organization“ byla vybrána Cap Gemini Ernst & Young jako nejlepší mezinárodní kniha pro podnikatele v roce 2000 a „The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy to Action“, přeložená do 24 jazyků (včetně češtiny), získala za svůj dopad na praxi Wildmanovu medaili z roku 2001 od Americké asociace účetních (AAA).

 Robert S. Kaplan born May 2, 1940, in New York, USA, Prof. Kaplan obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also obtained his MS in Electrical Engineering. Then, he moved to Cornell University for his graduate studies, where he obtained his PhD in Operations Research. After his graduation, Kaplan started his academic career at Tepper School of Business at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1968 and served as its dean from 1977 to 1983. In 1984 Kaplan joined the Harvard Business School, where he was appointed Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development. In 2006, Kaplan was named to the Accounting Hall of Fame. In the same year, he also received the Lifetime Contribution Award from the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association. In addition, Kaplan has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Stuttgart (1994), the University of Lodz (2006), and the University of Waterloo (2008).

  • The Balanced Scorecard invented by Prof. Kaplan and David P. Norton means linking a company’s current actions to its long-term goals. Kaplan and Norton introduced the balanced scorecard method in their 1992 Harvard Business Review article, The Balanced Scorecard: Measures That Drive Performance. This method has been endorsed by companies from every industry and corner of the world, as evidenced by the Palladium Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame for Executing Strategy and Bain & Company’s Management Tools and Trends report.
  • Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) co-developed Robert S. Kaplan with Steven R. Anderson as a methodology to truly understand costs, to help companies get on a more straightforward and more powerful path to higher profits. Most recently, this methodology is being applied to healthcare to measure health care delivery costs across an entire care continuum, at the medical condition level.

Kaplan is the author or co-author of 14 books and more than 175 articles (26 in Harvard Business Review) that are highly cited. By the end of September 2019, a total of 100 publications with more than 10,000 citations were listed in the Web of Science Core Collection database (basic search). Prof. Kaplan’s H index is 34 according to the same database. The Scopus database lists 90 publications with over 12,000 citations, and the H index is also according to this database 34. The worldwide reputation of prof. Kaplan is also supported by a summary of citations registered in the Google Scholar database. Publications and their translations into other languages register almost 170,000 citations, nearly 59,000 from 2014 (last without further adjustment of reported data).

The book „The Execution Premium: Linking Strategy to Operations for Competitive Advantage, Alignment, Strategy Maps“ was selected by Amazon as one of the top ten business books for 2004, „The Strategy-Focused Organization“ was selected by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young as the best international business book 2000 and „The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy to Action“, translated into 24 languages (including Czech), won the 2001 Wildman Medal from the American Association of Accountants (AAA) for its impact on practice.
